King Lear

After a year away from the West End, Sir Ian McKellen returns with what he has claimed may be his last Shakespeare stage performance. Transferring from Chichester Festival Theatre, King Lear comes to the Duke of York Theatre from 11 July for 100 performances only. And with half of the stall seats removed for each performance, this promises to be a production that sells fast and has high competition for tickets.

McKellen last played Lear on the West End in 2007 at the New London Theatre and received an Olivier Award nomination for his performance. This latest production has to date gleaned 4 and 5-stars from national press, so promises to be another acclaimed performance on its West End transfer.

King Lear is one of Shakespeare’s most demanding roles and has been played by a raft of theatrical greats over the years, including John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier and Donald Wolfit. More recently Glenda Jackson and Simon Russell Beale have updated the role to great acclaim. This version will be directed by Jonathan Munby.
